Is Microdermabrasion right for me?
Ask an Expert: Is Microdermabrasion right for me?
It is so important to take care of your skin from an early age. But if we’re being honest, it’s hard to know how to care for your skin at an early age. Most commonly, adults will begin to deal with the skin decisions their twenty-year old, carefree selves made and wonder how to correct the damage of sunspots, age spots and hyper pigmentation. If you fall into this common category, microdermabrasion may be for you.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is an advanced skin exfoliation system. As you age, your skins ability to naturally exfoliate dead skin cells decreases, which leaves you lacking that glow you had in your twenties. With the microdermabrasion process, your dead skin cells on the superficial layer of your skin are slowly “buffed” away by mechanical exfoliation. Kelly Wright-Rivas, Skin Care educator at PB Beauty School, describes the process as “tiny crystals or crushed diamonds being pelted at your skin and suctioned away at the same time.” It’s not as scary as it sounds! Kelly says the process does not hurt, as it feels more like sandpaper lightly rubbing against your skin.
Is microdermabrasion good for your skin?
Yes! The process is great for aging skin, skin with fine lines, liver spots, wrinkles and hyper pigmentation. It will leave your skin glowing and reduce the signs of aging. Due to the advanced exfoliation process, microdermabrasion is not recommended for acneic skin because of skin sensitivity.
How should I care for my skin before and after treatment?
At PB, we will prep your skin for your microdermabrasion treatment. Included in the $60 package, we will remove all makeup and give you a Dermalogica facial followed by an intense mask. Following your procedure, we ask that you do not wear makeup for 24-48 hours to allow your skin to breathe. Always wear sunscreen and a hat when in the sun. For those with aging skin, try to get in the habit of using a product that contains Retin A on your skin during the day. Retin A will help decrease pigmentation and decrease skin aging. Kelly recommends Deralogica Overnight Retinol Repair or the Super Rich Repair moisterizer, both part of their AGE smart line.
Keep in mind…
Something to keep in mind is that microdermabrasion is a process and your skin will oftentimes look worse before it gets better. This is because you are removing all barrier, superficial layers of the epidermis and each treatment is getting you closer to the layer with pigmentation. After a few treatments, the layer of your skin with pigmentation and age spots will be reached and buffed away; this is when the pigmentation will decrease and you will see results. It can take anywhere from two to four months to see serious results. Kelly suggests coming once every seven to ten days until you see results; and cannot stress enough to wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun to keep the results long lasting.
