It’s a tale as old as time; everyone wants the hair that they can’t have. Instead of fighting against your natural texture, use these tips to embrace your naturally curly locks with Cosmetology Educator Mr. Stephen’s Frizz-Free Natural Curls routine and put the days of frustration in the past!
Stephen Scull is a Cosmetology Educator at PB Cosmetology Education Centre, and like many of the students who attend Cosmetology School, he has amazing hair and takes pride in maintaining healthy locks. His curls look natural, shiny, and are completely frizz free. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Stephen and discuss his routine in extensive detail to learn how he achieves healthy curls so that we all too, could achieve frizz-free body.
Mr. Stephen, Cosmetology Educator and PB Cosmetology Education Centre grad, shares his tips for frizz-free curls.
PB: How would you describe your hair texture? Is this routine suggested for every hair type?
Mr. Stephen: My hair is naturally wavy and the texture is fine with medium density; this routine will help give you curl and body. My biggest tip would be to not fight the natural texture of your hair; work with it, not against it. However, I always encourage my clients to test different products to try something new and different.
PB: Is there anything specific in your wash process? What products do you use to wash and condition your hair in the shower?
Mr. Stephen: When working with any type of textured hair, whether it be curly, wavy, or tightly curled, wash day is crucial. When looking for a good shampoo, I personally suggest something to clarify and something to moisturize. My favorite clarifying shampoos are Bounce Curl Clarifying Shampoo or Devacurl’s Buildup Buster. Both are full of moisture but gently remove any product buildup on your hair. Look for products that are 100% free of sulfates, parabens, and silicones.
After clarifying, it’s best that you find a shampoo that’s moisturizing for your lovely locks. Try Bounce Curl’s Pure Silk Shampoo or Deva Curl’s No-poo or low-poo. No-poo or low-poo will give you a low-lather which will help keep the body’s natural scalp oils. In regard to your conditioning process, always find one that is full of moisture, which is what most curls crave. Tip: I try to pick one wash day a week, and all other days I co-wash. Co-washing is when you skip the shampoo and stick with only conditioner which leaves you with a ton of shine!
PB: Do you prefer air dry or blow dry after washing?
Mr. Stephen: It depends on the texture of your hair. If you have finer hair and are seeking more volume, I suggest using a diffuser on your blow dryer. The key to diffusing is to use low heat and low air-flow to prevent frizz. However, there is nothing wrong with air-drying your curls.
PB: What are your thoughts on biotin and various hair supplements the promote healthy, shiny hair?
Mr. Stephen: I have mixed reviews on Biotin, so I can’t really stick by it. What I can say, is keep up on your treatments. If your goal is healthy, shiny hair, then use a deep conditioner or mask twice a month or as needed. Treatments really help smooth the cuticle and will penetrate into the cortex of the hair. Natural scalp oils are the best way to achieve shine, so I suggest trying out co-washing.
PB: Do you have any tips for those trying to achieve natural curls?
Stephen: Avoid all high heat tools as much as possible and you’ll be surprised what your hair will do! A tip for all hair types: everything is a process of trial and error. It is important to find what works for you. I recently read the book, “The Curly Girl Method” and really loved the tricks they teach. I totally suggest this read.
