The One Face Mask You’ll Want This Winter

The One Face Mask You’ll Want This Winter

Shana Renzi, senior skin care student

Let’s be honest, there is a ton of buzz about face masks – from sheet masks to clay masks to masks with glitter to ones that change colors.  It’s all about the mask right now! While some of these are a lot of fun, how do we know which ones will help repair and protect our skin during the dry, cold months?

First, let’s remember that our skin is pretty much always prone to free radical damage (a reactive atom that has an unpaired electron, so it steals an electron from our skins’ healthy atoms – how dare it!), which can cause fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.  With the severe winter weather, our skin is also more susceptible to dryness, compromising our moisture barrier which can leave our skin sensitized. Our moisture barrier is an important function of the skin that helps keep irritants and bacteria out, keeping in only the moisture and water our skin needs.

So, while we do need to concern ourselves with replenishing moisture and amping up our use of antioxidants to fight free radicals, we also need to make sure we are using skin care with ingredients that help repair and replenish our moisture barrier.  All three of these functions of great skin care will help us keep our skin at its best, even when the weather is doing its worst.

Enter the superhero of masks – Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque.  It’s a lifesaver, and one of the favorites in our spa! Let’s break down some of the more prominent ingredients so we understand why.

Vitamins A, C, & E

Super important antioxidant ingredients, these vitamins will help neutralize free radicals and protect our skin from further damage.  Vitamin A is an excellent ingredient because it can work to restore the skin’s health and soften fine lines, while vitamin C repairs environmental damage and hydrates the skin.  Vitamin E is anti-inflammatory, and, therefore, it is skin repairing as well.

There are three peptides in this mask with super long, intimidating names – but don’t let that keep you from slathering them on your face!  Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide, and Arginine/Lysine Polypeptide. Peptides are an essential ingredient to effective skin care, and there are thousands of them on the skin care market.  Essentially, peptides help send signals to your skin to create more collagen. More collagen equals plump, bouncy skin. Who wouldn’t want more collagen? Sign us up, please!

Linoleic Acid

This is a star ingredient, as it is excellent for moisture barrier repair.  Linoleic Acid is an Omega-6 essential fatty acid that works to replenish the skin.  Since it’s a great moisturizing ingredient, it strengthens the skin’s defenses against the cold wintertime.

With little fragrance (a touch of lemon peel extract), this mask is excellent for all skin types.  The Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque retails for $52 at your local Ulta, or you can book an Age Smart Facial in our spa for just $40 – it’s included in the facial along with Dermalogica’s special anti-aging line.  Save your skin this winter!
